Three main areas for off-road vehicles have been set aside to offer drivers a variety of experiences. There are sandy roads and designated rides between South Jetty and the Siltcoos River (Florence area), small areas with the highest and most spectacular dunes in the Umpqua Riding Area (Winchester Bay) and large areas with varied riding between Spinreel and Horsfall (Coos Bay/North Bend). They all vary from one to three miles wide. Because they are continuous sand dunes, there are no figures on how many acres each cruise area contains, but Winchester and Coos Bay are about the same size and larger than Florence. ATVs are popular tools for hunters. Hunters must follow the same rules as other ATV operators. This includes presenting an ATV driver`s license, possessing an ATV safety education card, complying with the same training and equipment requirements, complying with noise regulations, and driving only on designated routes. This can make things difficult, as game testing and recovery must be done on designated trails and roads. Harvested game must be transported by hand to a road or trail and then transported by ATV or UTV.

There is also an exemption from the driver adjustment requirements for drivers who operate ATVs exclusively for agricultural, forestry, nursery or Christmas tree activities and who are used on land owned or leased by the owner of the vehicle. If a vehicle, such as a motorcycle or truck, has a license plate, it will need a permit on trails or sand dunes. If you drive a road vehicle such as a truck on forest gravel roads open to private cars, you do not need a permit. These gravel roads may be open to ATV use, and you will then need to have an ATV sticker if you do not have a license plate.

Okay, that sounds amazing! I`ve been quad biking many times, but I`ve never ridden an ATV through the sand dunes. It`s been on my list for a while. Oregon has a number of specific requirements for the equipment your ATV needs to be equipped with. As for the hills, Comp Hill and Show-off Hill (a steep wall with its own parking lot, depending on the season) are the largest. There is a fun and playful trail through the grassy dunes that runs along the beach called Coast Guard Road. ATV equestrian areas in Oregon are designated by ATV route systems, which means ATV use is limited to designated trails and roads. The Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area stretches along the Oregon coast from Florence to Coos Bay. Almost the entire neighborhood is accessible from Highway 101. The dunes are located south of Florence and north of the neighboring communities of Coos Bay, Charleston and North Bend. The Siuslaw River marks the northern border of the dunes near Florence. The River Umpqua flows into Winchester Bay and the sea, near the town of Reedsport, halfway along the dune section.

From the dunes is the road; North of Spinreel Road under Highway 1, where it joins Wildwood Drive. From here you can turn right onto Airport Way, then right again onto South 8th Street. From there, you can turn left onto Park and drive to Tenmile Lake County Park. Our Oregon Dunes guide starts with Winchester or «Windy» Bay.
